From the history of Mining museum in Rožňava

Mining museum in Rožňava was established in the year 1902 by the initiative of Boršodskogemerská group of Regional Hungary mining and metallurgy society with the help of the Rožňava city and financial gifts by Františka and Dionýz Andrássy. The creator of idea of establishing the mining museum was the author of monograph about mining in Gemer, the director of mines in the city of Železník – Gustáv Eisele.

The museum was built in the year 1905 according to project of the director of Rožňava mines – Alexander Muller. The first exposition with mining and metallurgy themes and mineralogical collections here was opened to the public for the first time in the year 1912. In this year the City museum in Rožňava was established as well. This museum was established thanks to the initiative of city intellectuals from Rožňava with their leader – chairman of conversation group of Rožňava – Ladislav Réz and schoolmasters from whom, because of his initiative was historian – Dr. Rudolf Hazslinszky most famous. He was the first director of City museum. The City museum was in the period between two world wars thanks to well educated director Koloman Tichy very active.

During the war the museum of mining and metallurgy was not active because the whole building was occupied by army. Both institutions were united in the year 1940. The first constant exposition was opened in the year 1943 and consisted of two parts: mining – metallurgy – mineralogical and historical. Despite the fact that this exposition was opened twelve months only, the director Tichy established progressive methods of work: he employed many experts, published his experiences in newspapers, published results of elaborating of objects in museum and archives, he prepared series of radio broadcasting.

War years had a negative effect on the museum. The part of collection fund was stolen and until the year 1956 the building was used for many purposes, but not for the needs of museum. After interferences from Czechoslovakian union of museum and political and state authorities the museum reopened. The first post- war exposition focused on mining and metallurgy of Gemer was opened in the May 1956.

The biggest material and personal growth was in the years 1974 – 1985. There were another objects added, educated experts employed, number of collections and expositions rose up.

( str. 3 z 3 ) Short time exhibitions were shown on the regular basis. From the year 1989 the expositions are being installed in the Exposition of creative art hall.

In the year 1981 the exposition Nature of Slovenský kras and close areas, was opened.
